Since before the sneak peek of the 1st newsletter I’ve been thinking of a name for it. It’s not coming easily, but truthfully haven’t given too much thought to it either. With this being different from the long-form articles, and more about a point in time, I keep coming back to “The Timestamp.” Yeah, I think I’ll go with “The Timestamp.”…. Welcome to The Timestamp Newsletter!
If you’re new here, the main focus of this site is to uncover and understand ways to best use our time. The longer articles are aimed at working on tried and true methods throughout history; the newsletter more focused on the “here and now” with recommendations.
We keep thinking that the World is going to get less strange. Since the last Newsletter, that has proven to be foolish. Here’s some random bits that are worth the time. Let’s roll.
- Music and Albums – Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Live at the Fillmore. Released on November 25th 2022, the recordings are from 1997; a few years after the uber-successful album Wildflowers was given to us all. The album captures the band during a the last nights of their Fillmore residency. Over half of the songs are covers, and it’s not hard to spot Tom and the boys enjoying the hell out of playing these songs and just some of their own. Whomever thought it was a good idea to hit record those nights, were more than right. Clocking in at 3 and a half hours of music, you’ll want to spread it out ( unless you just have that kind of time).
- Podcast: The Knowledge Project episode with Kunal Shah Kunal plainly lays out brilliant takes on human motivation, and without beating around the bush, describes how humans buy things based on signaling to other humans ( and envy). Probably why he’s been a successful investor.
- Book: The Comfort Crisis- by Michael Easter Top 3 book I read this year. Always careful to recommend an article or book with the word “Crisis” in it ( possibly the most incorrectly used word the last 5 years, along with “need”, “seen”, and “heard.”). It’s wild that our lives have no ‘wild’ in them. We’ve created an unchallenging environment for ourselves, and our bodies and minds are falling apart because of it. If I had a book I’d give all of America’s population to help solve our self-sabotage, it would be this one.
- Article: The Reagan Institute recently released results from a survey on American’s attitudes toward their Military. 48% reporting they had a “great deal of confidence” in their Military as compared to 70% in 2018. What’s the problem? This WSJ article points to “politization” and “wokeness” as the culprits; offering compelling evidence to support that theory.
- Best Purchase I’ve Ever Made: Leatherman Multi-tool. I’ve used this in so many situations that it would be useless to count them all. I also know that I’ll continue using it about every time I need something done in a pinch that my hands can’t do. Thanks to the genius that designed this thing!
- Solid Thought: On true friends – “The friend in my adversity I shall always cherish most. I can better trust those who have helped to relieve the gloom of my dark hours than those who are so ready to enjoy with me the sunshine of my prosperity.” ― Ulysses S. Grant
